| McCoy is a twenty
year student of alchemy. Her reoccurring childhood dream was of a
king being dismembered and ground up in a mortar and pestle. When
she saw the story of the Alexandrian Alchemists who ground up the
old king to produce the new king, she understood the dream as part
of a personal transformation process. Old ways of being must die to
give birth to the new. McCoy studied dreams and alchemy for twenty
five years in Zurich with Dr. C.A. Meier. Periods of depression are
often linked to descents into introversion, and the recording of dreams.
Here the darkness is not something to be feared, but a realm with
its own light. The ghosts and visions of the inner world, bring healing
and solace in the outer world. For the artist, the door between the
two worlds is left open, the dream is a way of incarnating spirit
into the body. Most of the works take up to a year to produce and
come from long series of dreams. As the artist works on a piece the
content often changes as new dreams occur, there is nothing fixed.
In this way each work represents a voyage of sorts, a living process
which is the real work. |
